Our History
Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Parish was founded in 1956 by Bishop Francis Hyland, the first bishop of Atlanta. In an effort to provide an excellent Catholic education for this parish, Monsignor Cornelius Maloney, IHM’s first pastor, founded a parish school. The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart were asked to staff the school. Sister Gerald Ann Higgins was named the first principal.
Highlights of our school history:- August 1958: IHM School opened its doors, with 238 students in attendance in grades 1 through 7. At that time, the front office was across the hall from the cafeteria.
- 1959: 8th grade was added.
- 1969: The middle school annex opened. It included additional classrooms, a library, and a gym. Originally, the library was housed in what is now the Religion classroom.
- 1969: Our Kindergarten program debuted.
- 1971: IHM School became fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
- 1990s: Our current library and front office space were added.
- 2009: IHM School received the prestigious Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award from the U.S. Department of Education, given to fewer than 1% of schools across the nation!
- 2019: IHM received its second Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award!
- 2021: IHM expanded to include two pre-K classes.
- 2025: The STEM lab opened, adding a 3D printer, VR goggles, and a broadcast studio to enhance our students’ experience with technology.
IHM School is accredited through Cognia, the parent company of SACS. As we approach our 70thanniversary, we look forward to continuing our legacy of excellence as a way to honor our past.
